The big question isn't if AI is coming to the classroom, but how we manage the predictable tension it creates: technology reduces the mental effort required for production (ease), but this reduction simultaneously increases the systemic and institutional expectations for resultant quality and depth. Our strategic agenda for the next five years must be focused not on fighting this trade-off, but on harnessing it.


I. The Policy Lag and the Burden of Perfection

The policies currently surrounding GenAI echo institutional reactions to earlier, disruptive technologies like the Internet and word processors. A comparative analysis reveals consistent patterns of initial policy shock and eventual normalisation.

The Historical Recurrence: Typing vs. Learning

The integration of word processors offers a direct parallel to our current dilemma, especially regarding the trade-off between effort and expectation. Word processors provided undeniable efficiency benefits, facilitating flexible review and editing.

However, this efficiency came at an intellectual cost. Studies found that when handwriting, students tended to plan more carefully beforehand to avoid corrections that would affect the tidiness of the final answer. Conversely, the ease of editing in a word processor reduced the incentive for careful pre-writing planning.

The critical lesson, and the most potent validation of the idea that technology raises expectations, is found in how assignments were marked. Because word-processed essays are inherently easier to read, markers tended to perceive errors in spelling and punctuation as more obvious and detectable than in handwritten scripts.
